DESCRIPTION

In the 1960’s, Nairobi became an important commercial center for East Africa, fostering an exchange of music from around the world. By the 1970’s Kenyan musicians began to blend sounds from the United States, Europe, West Africa and parts of Central Africa with their own musical traditions- most notably, Benga music. The following two decades mark a particularly innovative and exciting time for Kenya’s musical production. Our newest playlist highlights some of the obscure gems that emerged during this time that were recently unearthed and preserved by Soundway Records.
